Affectionately known as ‘Breck,’ this Colorado ski resort is one of the UK’s favorite destinations for USA ski holidays. With friendly locals, fantastic terrain, and an authentic atmosphere, it has a firm fan base and is a resort that many return to year after year. Here’s why:

1. Crammed with character

Founded in 1859, this former Victorian gold-mining town has a fascinating history and sense of authenticity that no purpose-built resort could ever recreate. The attractive clapboard houses along Main Street add to the town’s appeal and the fantastically friendly locals add to the welcoming atmosphere. The town is also a great place for shopping and its collection of ski stores, coffee shops, and independent boutiques is reason enough to take a day away from the slopes. The town’s lively après scene – (is not lively, more family-friendly) is also something to look forward to take your pick of more than 80 restaurants and bars, looking out for line-dancing in Wild West joints (only at Salt Creek – check this please) which date back to the gold rush days.

2. Appealing accommodation

Better value than nearby resorts like Vail, Breckenridge has a superb selection of affordable accommodations. The best ski in/out options are on or near Peak 9 – with stacks of on-site facilities,  Beaver Run Resort is perfect for families, as is The Village, which offers everything from swimming and shopping to ice-skating. Accommodation near the Four O’clock Run, like Breckenridge Pine Ridge Condos, tends to be particularly good value, as do those on Main Street, which give easy access to shops and restaurants. If you fancy pushing the boat out, check in to One Ski Hill Place, Breck’s premier luxury resorts.

3. Superb Skiing

Sitting at more than 3000 meters above sea level, this high-altitude resort promises a snow-sure season that can last well into April. With terrain to suit all abilities, expect everything from wide groomed runs (Peak 7 and Peak 9 are particularly good) to bowls, chutes, and glade skiing. Freestylers who ski Breckenridge are in for a treat too, with world-renowned snow parks, huge jumps, and half-pipes as well as a new beginners’ area for first-timers to find their feet. Breck’s ski schools also score highly; making it a popular choice for families, and the excellent range of beginner runs is perfect for novices or those in need of a confidence boost. What’s more, a Breckenridge ski pass gives you access to four other resorts – Beaver Creek, Vail, Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin – so running out of places to ski is never a problem.

4. Brand new terrain for

This year, Breck’s ski area grows by 23%, with ‘Peak 6’ adding an additional 543 acres to the resort. The first 200 acres opened on Christmas and, by the end of the season, the expansion will be complete, with 400 acres of the l and two new lifts turning Breckenridge into the 4th biggest ski resort in Colorado. , Peak 6’s signature run ‘Bliss’ features treat when you ski the USA.

5. Easy access

Catch a direct flight from the UK and touch down at Denver International nine hours later. Easy two-hour transfer rides away, Breckenridge sits in Colorado’s central Rocky Mountains. Once in the resort, getting about is a doddle – most places are walk able, and a regular bus service ferries skiers and shoppers around town. Many properties, including One Ski Hill Place and the Doubletree Inn, also offer free private shuttles. If you fancy skiing in other four resorts included in your lift pass, it’s a good idea to hire a car, so you can really make the most of your USA ski holiday.
