Family Holidays in Corfu
Corfu is one of the Ionian Greek Islands, with an enviable location in the Adriatic Sea near to both Albania and Italy. With a rich heritage, the island is full of interesting historical landmarks and exciting attractions. Add that to the beautiful beaches for which it is famous, and it should come as no surprise that Corfu is an ideal destination for family holidays.
With 8.5 hours of sunshine on average each day, this tropical destination is great for spending relaxing days at the beach, or exploring the ancient fishing villages. However you choose to spend your time in Corfu, each member of the family will be entertained and have a great make my trip holiday.
While Corfu Town is the most populated and built up location in the island, there are also countless other beautiful destinations on Corfu worth a visit. Nymphes is a large village with vibrant green plants and waterfalls that are refreshing to splash in. There are also a few agricultural vendors selling fruits and local homemade liquors that you can try, or even purchase to bring home as a souvenir. Kynopiastes is another traditional village, a mere 10 kilometers from the hotels and resorts in Corfu town.
The entire village is full of incredible architecture, including old mansions, 17th century marble churches, and even famed taverns that have welcomed politicians, royalty, and celebrities. Small alleyways and cobbled streets make it the perfect place to roam on foot, letting your children explore the incredible buildings one by one.
One of the most impressive historical landmarks in Corfu is the Achilleion Palace. Built by the Empress of Austria Elisabeth of Bavaria, Achilleion was built in 1890 with the theme being the Greek hero Achilles. The whole palace can be toured, and there are guides to tell you interesting facts about each of the rooms. In addition, the gardens are beautifully maintained and boasts impressive statues and water features as well.
Of course, the main reason many families visit Corfu is to relax and swim at one of the popular beaches. On the West side of the island most of the shores have more white sand, perfect for building sand castles and playing on the shore.
The Eastern side is generally home to calmer waters, ideal for small children who are still getting comfortable swimming in the sea. Lefkimmi beach is a favourite of families, thanks to the wide and long sandy shoreline, as well as the family friendly restaurant complete with a children’s playground. The waters are calm and perfect for children to play in.
Being a Greek Island, Corfu boasts impressive Greek cuisine. Whether you are searching for an upscale restaurant or a family friendly casual dining establishment, Corfu has something to meet your needs and please your palate. Captains is a popular choice for families, offering a mix of traditional Greek foods and Western favourites for kids. For a quick bite to eat, stop in one of the ubiquitous kebab shops for a loaded pita that is sure to satisfy your hunger.
