Renters Insurance

Renters Insurance

Renters insurance, sometimes referred to as tenants insurance, is often times an overlooked type of coverage, however if you have an apartment full of things you care about it’s a fantastic idea. Rental insurance provides coverage for your personal belongings while you live in a rental property.

In addition, it provides liability coverage, similar to a homeowner’s policy, to protect you from being held legally responsible for damages to property or persons that may occur in your rental home. Some landlords require proof of renters insurance in order to rent out their property, though this isn’t always the case. However renters insurance is important for anyone who is renting because you never know when disaster could strike.

What You Need to Know

For the most part, renters insurance is pretty straightforward. The landlord gets their own property insurance policy to protect the physical frame of the dwelling, and you get renters insurance to protect your belongings and for liability purposes. However, there are a few things worth mentioning about this coverage:

  1. If you have a roommate(s) you may each need to get your own insurance policy.
  2. In other words, if you are living with five people in a house, then all five of you may require separate renters insurance to protect your own belongings. One renter’s insurance policy may not cover all the renters in the residence. But really why are you living with 5 people, who does all those dishes?

  4. Landlords are not responsible for your personal possessions.
  5. Some people assume that just because their landlord has insurance, they too are covered, that is not the case. Let’s say, for example, that someone were to break into the home, steal your electronic system and jewelry. None of that would fall under the property-owners coverage and without insurance of your own you would be out of luck.
